Waffle-Iron Brownies

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F
  2. If you plan to bake the brownies, and butter a 9-inch square baking pan
  3. Otherwise, preheat a waffle iron
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt
  5. In a small, heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and milk
  6. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring until the butter has melted
  7. Remove from the heat
  8. Add the unsweetened chocolate and vanilla
  9. Stir until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth
  10. Place into a pan of cold water to cool the mixture to room temperature
  11. With an electric mixer, beat in the eggs
  12. Gradually blend in the flour mixture until smooth
  13. (Spread evenly into the prepared pan if you are baking the brownies
  14. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the center is just set and feels firm when touched
  15. Cool completely before attempting to cut, these are very rich and gooey! Dust with powdered sugar and cut into squares
  16. ) Drop rounded spoonfuls of the brownie mixture into the preheated waffle iron
  17. Close the iron and cook for about 2 minutes until the brownies are done
  18. Remove and cool on a rack
  19. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired
  20. Yield: about 2 dozen hearts or 2-1/2-inch waffle-iron cookies Note: To make pizelle in the shape of cups, drape the warm, still flexible cookie over the bottom of a small juice glass; cool
  21. Fill with ice cream, sherbet or berries and cream to serve
